Take One Picture – Artisic Action Abounds!

We never do anything by half at Strand! Across the school children have thrown themselves into creating amazing artworks in response to the National Gallery’s Take one Picture project. Take One Picture is a nationwide scheme for primary schools which aims to inspire a lifelong love of art and learning by promoting the role of visual arts within education. This year’s picture is ‘An experiment on a bird in the Air Pump’ from 1796 by Joseph Wright ‘of Derby’ – a thrilling composition full of dark shadows and eerie illumination. The children have been working hard all week to create a response to the picture and we have been amazed at their creativity and flair. We have seen tie dying tee shirts, sewing hearts, moon drawings, recreations of the scene in the Year 6 gardens, experiments with hydraulics and a myriad of plasticine birds that have been appearing all over school. Next week Mrs Bonner, who is the curator masterminding this extravaganza, will be creating an exhibition of the art works in the gym. The exhibition will be open to parents after half term – watch this space for times and dates. Once the exhibition is hung we will be photographing the art work and submitting them to the gallery for consideration in this year’s competition. When we last entered we were lucky enough to get two pieces exhibited in the National Gallery – we have our fingers crossed.
