Friday 8 March 2024 World Book Day Extravaganza Strand became alive yesterday with literary characters from all our favourite books. From Tweedledee and Tweedledum to Vikings and from The Seven Dwarves to Percy Jackson, we seemed to have it all. We even had a walking, talking dictionary! The costumes were, as ever, a great reflection of the huge breadth of reading interest at Strand. However, this year also saw the introduction of ‘Get Cosy and Read’, so children and staff alike came into school in their cosiest pyjamas to spend some quality time snuggled up in the library and classrooms reading and sharing their favourite books.

Friday 8 March 2024 Authors Visit Strand Katya Balen visited us on Monday. She started by giving Swan an impromptu indoor mudlarking experience and they used the objects they’d found to create some fantastically imaginative stories. For example, Ilyas had a blue crystal that gave him the power to fly and Oskar found a key which he decided was a portal to the beginning of the universe where you could bathe in all the colours of the rainbow! After lunch, the whole school met her in an assembly where she gave us an insight into what it takes to be an author and get a book published.

Friday 1 March 2024 World Book Day 7th March Next Thursday 7th March, we will be celebrating World Book Day. As ever, the children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite literary character. However, in a departure from tradition, we are also inviting children to "Get Cosy and Read" by coming to school in their most comfortable and cosy clothes - think snuggling up in pyjamas with your favourite book and a hot chocolate! We will leave the choice to you and your child, but as usual, one of the highlights of the day will be our costume (and pyjama) parade in the playground. The costumes at Strand are always spectacular and showcase the incredible breadth of reading interest in our school.

Friday 15 December 2023 Christmas Concerts It was lovely to see so many of you joining us at Gunnersbury Baptist Church for this year’s concerts. They opened this year with the powerful piece Djole - packed with complex djembe rhythms and beautiful vocals. We do hope you enjoyed the fantastic singing, which included some very intricate part-singing from all year groups. There was also one of Mr Bonner’s trademark mash ups with Peace on Earth and Little Drummer Boy. The whole school songs raised the roof with a full range of musical techniques on display, from the haunting dynamics of A Million Dreams to the complex part singing (in French!) of Vois Sur Ton Chemin. However, the children were, as ever, the stars of the show; singing beautifully and delivering their lines with confidence and clarity. Special mention, and a huge thank you, to Geoff Bonner, who worked to prepare the drummers and played on the day, Gill Coulton who liaised with the Gunnersbury team to make sure everything ran smoothly, and to Charlie F wh

Friday 29 September 2023 Year 6 Debating Team visit Putney High On Tuesday, Year 6 were lucky enough to be invited to an inter-school debating event at Putney High School. After some fun introductory games, it was time to reveal the first motion: this house believes that children under 14 should not be allowed to go to boarding school. For this first debate, Strand were split into two proposition teams (arguing for the motion) and two opposition teams (arguing against the motion). Even though it was Strand against Strand, there was still a lot of courage on show in taking the floor to make a clear, reasoned argument. After lots of constructive feedback from the judges, it was time to go again, now against teams from other schools. The second motion proposed that children should have more say in what they learn in school. This idea sparked some genuine dissent amongst our Year 6s: the opposition disagreed, concerned that children would limit their opportunities by sticking only to the subjects that they liked whereas the proposition insisted that mo

Friday 29 September 2023 Year 5&6 Girls Football Team Off to a Winning Start On Wednesday, 17 Year 5 and 6 girls represented the school in this year’s first football tournament at Springwell school. Split into two teams, Strand A and Strand B, both teams went into the games pumped and raring to go. Strand A got off to a great start dominating their first games but despite this (and having more shots than they can count), they only found the net twice in their first 3 games but still remained undefeated. Strand B on the other hand couldn’t stop scoring in their first game with Daisy K scoring a hat-trick and Hannah adding to the scoreline. As the morning went on both Strand team found their shooting boots and won the rest of their games with Strand B only losing one game - and that was to Strand A! In the end Strand A topped the group with 14 points closely followed by Strand B on 11 points in second place. Goal scorers for the teams were Imani, Daisy K, Hattie, Grace, Yasmina and Hannah. Well done to Nicole, Daisy May, Evie, Charlotte UP, Grace, Cle

Friday 23 June 2023 Team Captains Elected This week, the school has been caught up in election frenzy as the children in Year 5 have been standing for high office as team captains. A huge number of children stood and made great speeches during the hustings with every child in Year 5 taking part in some way or another. The election was held yesterday in the gym, which served as a polling station, and the results announced today in assembly. It was a close-run election and all the Year 5 candidates showed great confidence and courage in standing for office. In assembly, we took the opportunity to focus on the importance of exercising the democratic right which underpins British society – voting for your leaders and taking the time to evaluate your choices, looking carefully at each candidate’s pledges and comparing them to their actions.

Friday 28 April 2023 Footbridge Closure You may have seen the notices on the railway footbridge stating that it will be closed for replacement from the 15th May for a period of 10 weeks. Then, after eating lunch in the brand new classroom facility, it was time for an urban/rural nature walk, spotting cormorants, moorhens and so much more. Here’s a fascinating fact for you – eels that have travelled all the way from the Sargasso Sea, across the Atlantic, can be found in the River Brent! Not to mention the bats that hang out underneath the motorway viaduct. It was a hugely enjoyable trip with lots to learn about our local environment and the importance of conservation. Well done to Aisha, Faduma, Lazar (5S), Alanna-Mari

Friday 3 March 2023 World Book Day 2023 We celebrated in style with lots of book-related activities including our traditional book character costume parade and visits to the Reading Café. We were also treated to two brilliant author visits arranged by Mr Thorne. Firstly Hannah Moffatt – a new author whose debut novel Small! about a boy on stilts at a school for giants has just been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. Our second author was Aisling Fowler whose first novel Fireborn: Twelve and the Frozen Forest was a huge hit last year and we were lucky enough to get the sequel Phoenix and the Frost Palace before its official release day in the shops. Years 3 & 4 and Swan had fun creating creatures from the swamp whilst Years 5 & 6 invented a huntling and a monster to live in their imaginary world. We also learnt that inspiration can come from anywhere, books obviously but also video games and TV, and you are never too young to start writing! As ever the costumes were brilliant and

Friday 24 February 2023 World Book Day - Wednesday 1st March Next week, we will be celebrating World Book Day, on Wednesday 1st March, along with our Infant colleagues. This is a change of date due to industrial action. As is tradition, the children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite literary character. We’re hoping to see as many homemade costumes made of recycled materials as possible! The costumes at Strand are always spectacular and showcase the incredible breadth of reading interest in our school. The highlight as ever will be our costume parade through the playground. This year will also see the return of last year's hit, the Reading Café. Year groups will be mixed together throughout the day to share their favourite reads with children outside of their class, while munching a biscuit or two! Children are therefore asked to bring in one book on Wednesday which they feel confident to talk about to their peers. This could be the book which has inspired their costume, their all-time favourite or simply their

Friday 18 November 2022 Author Visit On Monday, the whole school was treated to a visit from fantastic author Jennifer Killick, creator of the brilliant Alex Sparrow, Crater Lake and Dread Wood series. With us all day, Jennifer spoke to Years 3 and 4 about the importance of imagination and gave some great ways to keep them growing so that they ‘don’t shrivel up and die’! The focus with Years 5 and 6 was the inspiration behind her latest horror series, which included how to scare and disgust your reader to keep them hooked! Some lucky children across the school, including Otter and River classes, were able to take part in a writing workshop focussing on ‘suspicion’. The children were encouraged to find unusual things around them and were taught how to generate ideas and retell stories relating to these ‘suspicious’ items. With tremendous creativity being shown in their writing and story-telling, Jennifer clearly ignited the imagination of all the children.

Friday 11 November 2022 Strandites Shine in Borough Cross Country On Wednesday, Strand took part in the cross country Championships at Osterley Park. Thirteen children from Years 4-6, who had impressed us with their long distance running in the Mini Marathon, were chosen to represent. Children in Year 3/4 ran 1km while those in Year 5/6 ran 1.6km. For the boys races, well over 150 children were running and for the girls nearly 100! Incredibly, out of the hundreds of children competing, Hannah in Year 4 and Sofia in Year 6 both came 1st in their races meaning that between them they won every girls race in the borough. Hattie was close behind them coming in 3rd place! For the boys, Sebastian in Year 5 came an impressive 5th place and Daniel in Year 6 10th. The rest of our runners almost all came within the top 100. Because of their outstanding achievements and being in Year 6, Sofia and Daniel have been put forward to represent Hounslow in the London Youth Games cross country event later this month. Congratulations to everyone in Yellow Team and to Felix and Alice who have been great captains this year. The Strand Special Award went to Amelia and Sophie M in recognition of the way they exhibit all the qualities we expect in a Strandite, all the while being quietly brilliant – actually Miss Manson is not quiet at all but equally brilliant! Honorable mentions went to George and Felix who were in the running for the award. The Buj Wretham

In the morning, our new Juniors Strandites met their class teacher and support staff and completed some super maths and reading activities. Playtime and lunchtime were great fun as everybody started to learn the new routines and all showed how #spirited and #supportive they are. The afternoon was a chance to spend some time with our specialist staff. Mr Murray's French lesson was 'très bon!', PE with Mr Bentley was "super active and fun" and in Computing Mrs Donovan and Mrs Ristic taught everybody to log onto Sumdog on Chromebooks #scholarly. Handovers with our Infant colleagues will continue and the Year 2s will have another lesson with their new teacher and share show songs with the Year 6s towards the end of term.

Friday 1 July 2022 Grow a Pound Grow a PoundOver the last few weeks Year 6 have been working hard starting their own businesses for our Grow a Pound initiative. After an initial investment of £1, the children have been tasked with creating innovative businesses in order to grow that money and fund their leavers hoodies. From very well appreciated staffroom samosas, to car washes, home grown fruit, ice pops and ice creams and even father's day cards, we’ve seen it all! Year 6 have raised a huge amount and they're not finished yet - not only are they funding their hoodies but they're working hard to leave a legacy for future Strandites.

Friday 17 June 2022 Secondary Simulation Well, this week has certainly been a busy one in Year 6 - or should I say Year 7! Secondary simulation week has been taking place everyday and the children have really risen to the challenge. With a new expectation to organise themselves with equipment, find their way to different classrooms, ensure that their parents have signed their planners and manage a much more demanding homework schedule, every child has been able to experience a taste of life at secondary school. The children have demonstrated real responsibility and maturity throughout this week and should be incredibly proud of how they have conducted themselves. It won’t be long before we are sending them off to their secondary schools and this has served as a perfect practice. A huge well done to Year 6 for taking it in their stride and embracing it with the spirit with which it was intended - even the detentions!

Friday 29 April 2022 Strand Launches The Big Answer Each of our topics are framed as an ‘enquiry’, driven by a ‘big question’ that steers learning through a clear sequence of lessons. As one lesson feeds into the next, knowledge and understanding grow. By the end children can use the knowledge they’ve gained to address the ‘big question’ at the heart of each topic. Over the course of the Summer term each class will present their 'big answer' to their families and classmates.

Friday 4 March 2022 World Book Day Yesterday we celebrated World Book Day in style! Strand came alive with characters from our favourite children’s books, bracing the chilly weather we showed off our fabulous costumes in a whole school parade. From the usual Hogwarts gang and Where’s Wally characters, to a truly Fantastic Mr Fox and the Year 4 team dressing up as a vicious host of Vikings! Another big hit was the launch of the Strand Reading Café! Year groups gathered together to share their favourite books with each other, over squash and biscuits. Not only was it lovely to see different year groups mixing together again, but it was fantastic hearing the children share stories, facts and their thoughts about what they were reading. We are hoping to make this a more regular occurrence in the coming months now mixing is more possible. Year 3 and 4 were lucky enough to watch a live performance of Michael Rosen. His hilarious poems and stories had us all equally enthralled and in fits of giggles –

Friday 25 February 2022 Calling All Gardeners - The Secret Garden Needs You! During COVID our much loved secret garden has become rather overgrown without regular attention from the gardening gang. We are keen to get the space cleared so we can plant our new hedgerow to encourage bio diversity. Consequently, we are looking for any keen gardeners who would be able to help us clear the area and ideally someone with access to a wood chipper to deal with the waste. If you have any time to spare on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday please contact the office - we'd love to hear from you.

Children are asked to come to school dressed up as a character from a book as well as bringing a book that they would like to share with their peers. Friday 28 January 2022 Strand Recommends Last term, we joined schools across the country as part of the judging for the Young People’s Book Prize 2021 awarded by the Royal Society. Our panel of children from years 5 and 6 had to rate each book in four different categories: interest, ease of reading, look and feel, and inspiration. The scores were consolidated and it was very close but our choice was Under the Stars, a book written by an astrophysicist that gives engaging answers to questions about the night sky. Thank you and well done to everyone on the panel for some brilliant feedback and a lot of reading! The award ceremony is on YouTube in March when we will find out which book has won the prize.

Friday 21 January 2022 STARS Award Yesterday we took delivery of our Gold STARS award for promoting active and safe travel to school. The award was obviously delivered in a sustainable way by electric cargo bike! Thank you to everyone who has taken part in all our initiatives in the last year but more importantly have changed their habits and travel more sustainably. Miss Heale and Miss Smith Stevenson who submitted all our evidence collected the award on behalf of the school. We still have some way to go but small changes can have a big impact particularly when driving to school. One change drivers can make is parking a little distance from the school and walking a short distance. This solves the problem of unsafe parking and turning in the Brooks Lane turning head and helps to up those active minutes. Give it a go next week.

Friday 26 November 2021 Open Day Thank You Thank you to all the families who took the time to attend Open Day on Wednesday - It was just lovely to see the school full of visitors again. The children were so excited to share their work with families and take them on a tour of the school. We were forced to limit numbers and sadly some families were disappointed. The event was so successful we will be running another one in the Spring Term when hopefully we can accommodate everyone. Thank you to the ambassadors from across the school who guided visitors to classes and gave impromptu tours! They were a real credit to the school.

Saturday 20 November 2021 OFSTED Visit The OFSTED inspector, Alison Colenso, left school yesterday and we are returning to normal after the excitement of having a special visitor on Wednesday and Thursday. The children (and staff!) were exemplary and all had a great time showing off their fantastic skills and talents. The inspector was very complimentary - and so they should be with such a brilliant group of children and staff to inspect. Thank you to all the parents who spared a moment to fill in the parent questionnaire, encouraged their children to do the same, spoke to the inspectors before and after school and kept the staff going with biscuits and treats. Your support was very much appreciated. The report will be out shortly so watch this space.

Saturday 13 November 2021 Anti-Bullying Week 2021: One Kind Word Anti-Bullying Week takes place next week. Kindness is more important today than it has ever been. During COVID-19, we have all realised how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us. This is one of the reasons that ‘One Kind Word’ has been chosen as the theme this year. Each year group will explore this theme throughout the week and on Friday 19th we will have BLUE (Be Lovely and Understanding to Everybody) Friday where everybody can wear blue mufti to show our commitment to antibullying every day at Strand. Odd socks can also be worn on Friday (they don't have to be blue!) to celebrate that we are all different but all equal.

Friday 5 November 2021 COP 26 @Strand Wow! What a week it has been for both the Eco Committee and wider school as we turned our attention to climate change and eco issues here at Strand whilst world leaders met to discuss reducing net emissions in Glasgow. On Monday, the Eco Committee were joined by Brentford and Chiswick MP Ruth Cadbury where they shared all of the fantastic changes we have made in school to become more green, such as planting trees, recycling a variety of materials and reducing our carbon footprint by walking or cycling to school! The committee spoke with great confidence and passion and it was a real honour to have Ruth with us; she was keen to learn about our ideas for the future and how she and her party could help us get there. The week ended with the Eco Committee meeting with Anna Williams, our Eco Governor, to tell her about our work and find out how the GB ensure that Eco issues are always on the agenda at Governing Body meetings. The Committee will be writing a report to Governors to share what

It was a very close game in the final match, against Southville school, where the score ended in an agonising 3-2 defeat. A huge well done to all the girls - Julia, Anouk, Fatima, Samara, Ruwaida, Livia, Vega and Simona, with a particular congratulations to Bella and Ayesha for their fantastic shooting. Friday 15 October 2021 Strand Achieves Gold Starts Award We are delighted to inform you that Strand has again been awarded the STARS Gold award by Transport for London (TfL). STARS inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling. In the last year, we have participated in initiatives such as The Big Pedal, Walk to School Week and Street Tag, recognising both the health and environmental benefits of active travel to and from school. Maintaining this great achievement will require continued efforts from us all to further reduce car use, transform travel habits and engage the wider community to promote best practices. A huge thank you to Miss Smith Stevenson and Miss Heale who have done all the hard work collating and submitting evidence to the Hounslow team.

Friday 15 October 2021 Souper Harvest Supper! The Harvest Supper on Wednesday was a simply souper affair! Singing skills were certainly on display as Mr Bonner had Year 6 singing in parts and harmonies with a cracking medley of True Colours, and Times Like These – who knew those songs would sound so good together? The children sang beautifully and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as they finished their set with a soaring rendition of One Day Like This. The soup was also a hit with old favourites like Strand Surprise, Leek and Potato and Creamy Tomato being overtaken in the popularity stakes by Carrot, Ginger and Coconut. Thank you to all the families who contributed to the event by donating ingredients, buying tickets and eating soup - it was lovely to see everyone back together enjoying the singing. The event raised a whopping £378 which will go to Water Aid – a fitting end to the ‘It’s Not Fair’ topic, where inequalities around access to basic necessities such as clean water have been

Friday 10 September 2021 Well done Year 3 Congratulations to Year 3 who have completed their first week in the Juniors. We have been so impressed with how well they are settling in and adapting to Junior life, particularly showing great independence in the mornings when coming into school. They were very proud to receive the first stamp in their passports for their super attitude. The children have been introduced to our ten Strand Values and have used them to help create their class rules, and some of these values have already been displayed lots by individuals; special mention goes to Raimundo in 3M for showing respect by always being so polite, Louis in 3S for showing super courage for joining our school, and Fredrik in 3K for showing such responsibility throughout the week. If you have any comments, questions or concerns please email or telephone the office and your child's class teacher will contact you.

Saturday 3 July 2021 Team Captain Elections This week the school has been caught up in election frenzy as the children in Year 5 have been standing for high office as team captains. A huge number of children (over 40) stood and made great speeches during the virtual hustings with every child in Year 5 taking part in some way or another. The school has been plastered with posters as candidates worked hard to canvass votes. The election was held in the hall, which served as a polling station, and the results were announced in assembly this morning. It was a close run election and all the Year 5 candidates showed great confidence and courage in standing for office. In assembly we took the opportunity to focus on the importance of exercising the democratic right which underpins British society – voting for your leaders and taking the time to evaluate your choices, looking carefully at each candidate’s pledges and comparing them to their actions. So with no further ado, these are the new Team Captains:-

From human slot machines, carefully cleaned footballs to the obligatory throwing the wet sponge, the stalls were amazing. A huge thank you to all the families who supported their child with their bizarre requests and helped them to meet the ever-changing deadlines. Friday 25 June 2021 Grow a Pound Over the last few weeks Year 6 have been working hard starting their own businesses for our Grow a Pound initiative. After an initial investment of £1, the children have been tasked with creating innovative businesses in order to grow that money and fund their leavers hoodies. From very well appreciated staffroom bacon sandwiches, to car washes, writing personalised stories, selling fudge on the rec and even medication for poorly bees, we’ve seen it all! So far Year 6 have raised almost £1,000 and they're not finished yet - not only are they funding their hoodies but they're working hard to leave a legacy for future Strandites.

Friday 18 June 2021 Year 4 Times Tables Rock Stars Congratulations to Year 4 who completed the Multiplication Tables Check this week. By the end of Year 4, the National Curriculum expectation is to be fluent with multiplication facts up to 12 x 12 and everybody has been working very hard to achieve this. The check was optional this year but what a great way to celebrate all of the effort at home and school to master those key facts that help with so many aspects of maths. We have also noticed that many Year 3 children are practising their times tables regularly and making great progress too. Please keep it up; using Times Tables Rock Stars is a fun way to build in that essential regular practice.

Friday 11 June 2021 Year 4 River Trip 4B enjoyed the final river trip this Thursday and there was much learning to be had. We cringed on discovering the revolting state the Thames was in 150 years ago, made predictions about the level of pollution in the water today and tested it to see if we were correct. During our exploration of the foreshore we were amazed at all the wildlife we were able to catch. Eight crabs, multiple leeches and even an eel! Though not electric, as first hoped, he was a fantastic specimen. We can thoroughly recommend a trip down to the foreshore. It is teeming with life.

Friday 11 June 2021 UKMT Junior Maths Challenge Some of Year 6 took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge earlier this term. This year our pupils were awarded 2 golds (Ashmi and Finn), 7 silvers (Beau, Daniel, Felix, Francis, Lucy, Melisa and Roxy) and 7 bronzes (Alice, Amani, Joe, Lily C, Lily F, Rania and Zeynep). Friday 11 June 2021 Year 3 Trip to Kew Gardens Excitement was in the air on Wednesday when Year 3 visited Kew Gardens to help answer the big question of their science unit “What do plants need to thrive?”. It was fantastic to see how much of their knowledge of the functions of different parts of a plant, pollination and seed dispersal was at their fingertips. Seeing how thousands of plant species adapt to different environments, and how many amazing uses they have, also made us reflect on how important it is that we all do our bit to help our environment thrive. This wonderful setting clearly inspired everybody's artistic skills too; it was great to record observations in our sketch books. Thank you to all the parents who accompanied us on the hottest day of the year so far; your support is much appreciated.

The competition is aimed at pupils in years 7 and 8 and there were over 540 entries to the challenge section which contained a selection of 8 questions based around the theme of nature. Lily solved the problems with style, laying out her answers in a logical sequence that clearly explained her working - a true mathematician. It should be noted that Lily submitted her entry during lockdown, showing real commitment and independence - two key Strand Values. Lily has been invited to Liverpool University to receive her award - we are all very proud of her.

Friday 30 April 2021 Pear Sculpture in the Meadow Today we have been following the installation of an amazing piece of artwork on the field. The piece, a 4ft high pear made using dry stone walling techniques, has been gifted to Strand Schools by a family and was installed today by its creator Tom Trouton, a landscaper. Year 5 were lucky enough to watch Tom at work, seeing how he transformed the natural stone into a work of art. Later in the term Year 5 will be creating their own land art so this was a fantastic opportunity to talk to a real craftsman about the creative process they go through. The location of the pear has been chosen to make sure it can be seen but, as seasons change and the meadow grows, our view will transform: it will disappear into the long grass with only the stalk peeking out over the flowers. A great addition to our site.

Friday 30 April 2021 Year 3 Historians This week, Year 3 has been answering the question “How did life progress from the Stone Age to the Iron Age?”, a culmination of all their learning during our ‘Through the Ages’ history topic. Focusing on how the development of farming and technology helped to make life more advanced and easier, the children wrote some brilliant answers showing just how much knowledge they have gained over the topic. As Sebastian put it, “people in the Late Stone Age started to settle. They were no longer nomadic. They discovered how to plant and grow crops and domesticated the animals to make them do the work.” We think we might be ready for university pretty soon!

Friday 30 April 2021 Meet the Author - William Nicholson Zooms Into Year 6 Miss Coulton’s Y6 reading group had a real treat this week when they met with author William Nicholson virtually. This wasn’t just a standard webinar though - it was completely personalised. During remote learning the children read William Nicholson’s novel, The Wind Singer, and as part of their response, wrote their own question to the author. No sooner were the questions submitted than he replied with a special video in which he answered everybody individually. There is no better way to discover the inspiration, imagination and writing process behind a story than hearing it straight from the author. Both the children’s thoughtful questions and William’s in-depth answers were brilliant. Huge thanks to William for finding the time in his busy schedule to share his insights – he is also a very successful screen writer (Gladiator, Shadowlands…) so watch out for an upcoming real life drama about the Thai cave rescue. Thanks too to Cally, Sam&rsqu

Saturday 24 April 2021 Sustrans Big Pedal Challenge For the next two weeks we are taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal 2021, the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from 19th April to 30th April and we’d love everyone to get involved! Making the school run active is a great way for children to get exercise, which is important for physical health and mental wellbeing as well as helping to reduce congestion and air pollution around our school. Families are encouraged to take active journeys to school on as many days as possible during the event. Each day we will be entered into a prize draw and our Year 6 team captains will be helping to see which classes have had the most active journeys to school.

Saturday 24 April 2021 A Summer of Sport Our first week into the summer term has been an exciting one for sport at Strand. In PE lessons, the children will be learning cricket followed by rounders. The PE team were very impressed with the behaviour on the rec - especially Year 3, where for many children it was their very first experience of cricket! Year 3 had a particularly busy day on Thursday, where they enjoyed a session from Dukes Meadows Tennis coaches. Tennis coaching will continue for the next five weeks until half term.

Thursday 1 April 2021 Strand Celebrates Autism Awareness Day Yesterday we all wore blue to show our support for autism awareness. Miss Essex led an assembly reminding us all that people with ASC have a unique view on the world describing both the challenges and positives this brings. She was joined by Andres from River class who shared, very eloquently, what having autism means to him. Andres speaking about his experience gave other children across the school the confidence to speak to their classmates about their own diagnoses and a chance for us all to remember the mantra - different but equal. Miss Essex also showed the fantastic cake (pictured below) made by one of our talented parents to raise awareness of autism on social media. The cake depicts a head in silhouette, to signify that autism is unseen, whilst the glasses signify the unique view people on the spectrum have of the world. It was a great opportunity to open conversations about the differences we all have and a reminder to people of how important it is to treat others with respec

Friday 26 March 2021 Strand Juniors PE YouTube Channel During lockdown the PE team created a collection of dance, skills and fitness videos to support children with PE at home. Since we've been back at school, the children have enjoyed these in class in their movement breaks. We have now created a YouTube channel so that families can access all of the content at home too! Search for 'Strand Juniors PE' on YouTube or click this link

Friday 26 March 2021 World Down Syndrome Day Celebrated World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated on Monday as #supportiveStrandites helped to spread the word by wearing mismatched socks. The reason we wear mismatched socks is because chromosomes look like socks, and people who have Down’s syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21. We all learned Makaton signs to 'A Better Place' and the whole school performed together at Monday's assembly - it's set to be a firm favourite from now on!

Friday 19 March 2021 Census Day March 21st Each year group has explored what a census is and how and why it takes place. This led to many interesting discussions and next week each class will be completing a Strand census. Each year group has also chosen a particular area to collect data on and to find ways to improve. Year 3 are collecting data about how many people eat breakfast, a healthy snack, manage to fit in 5 fruit and veg a day etc. Once they collect the information, they will then explore why it is so important to eat such a healthy diet and it will be interesting to see if we can increase the numbers found in the initial count. Year 4 are focusing on collecting data around reading and physical activity, Year 5 around environmental issues such as recycling and ways to conserve energy and Year 6 around secondary transfer and possible careers. If you have not completed the census yet, please do involve your child in the process and if you have already completed it, please ask them about the plans their year group has ab

Friday 19 March 2021 Red Nose Day Returns! It has been just lovely to see everyone dressed in red today, celebrating Red Nose Day - it's a highlight in the Strand calendar so it has been great to be able to celebrate together. Friday 12 March 2021 Red Nose Day 2021 - 19th March As usual we will be celebrating Red Nose Day in style at Strand. Please wear as much red as you can next Friday to show your support. The celebrations will last all week with talent shows taking place in each class and the winning act from each class will take part in the virtual event which will be beamed into each class on Friday via Google Meets. The final part of the day will be a teacher 'gunking' to replace our traditional make over. Children will be able to cast their votes for the teacher they want to be gunked during the week (£1 per nomination in a sealed envelope to school or pay on the ParentPay tab) and the lucky teacher will be gunked on Friday afternoon at the end of the talent contest. Please make donations to support this important cause, either brought to school in a sealed envelope or via the tab on ParentPay.

Friday 12 March 2021 Welcome Back! It has been just fantastic to see everyone back in school this week - the sound of children laughing and playing has been much missed during the last term. We have had an astounding 97% attendance this week - let's keep that up. The children have amazed us with the cheerful and resilient way they have adapted to face to face teaching. Teachers have been making the most of the sunny weather and getting outside to learn as much as possible.

Friday 5 March 2021 World Book Day Yesterday we celebrated World Book day both at home and on site with costumes, book themed picnics and a fiendishly hard masked reader quiz. We also launched a virtual library which showcases some of the great books we have in school; if you haven’t checked it out yet then pop over to Google Classroom and have a look. Thank you to Miss Kennedy Alexander for masterminding this event.

Friday 26 February 2021 Eco Committee Announcement Miss Heale, Ms Perkins and the whole Eco Committee would like to say a huge well done and thank you to those children who spent time over half term completing different eco projects. A special mention for Supo in 3A who completed an eco artwork all the way from Nigeria!

Friday 5 February 2021 SOS - Strand Off Screens We hope you have enjoyed the SOS activities we have planned to break up the week and give some much needed screen breaks. The children have really enjoyed the practical activities with feedback on the stream being universally positive. Pictured below is Francesca's fab fractions chart - just one of the many off screen activities the creative team at Strand have planned. There were too many pictures to put in the newsletter so I made a slide show - click here to see all the fab work. If you need a break - and if it's not raining - we are still taking part in the Street Tag competition… Strand Third In Street Tag The Street Tag leader board is hotting up. We are holding onto our 3rd place with a cracking 1,667,290 points and we have walked 4,449 miles. Not bad during lockdown! Special mention to Callum and Sophie M who are closing in on Mr Ingram, who tops the leader board. The contest runs until 19th April so we still have plenty of time to close the gap on Edison and Strand Infa

Friday 5 February 2021 Mental Health Week - Express Yourself This week in school and at home we have been taking part in Children's Mental Health Week, exploring the theme of Express Yourself. Expressing yourself is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through creativity and all week we have been thinking about the art, music, poetry, dance, drama, and activities that make us feel good. Expressing yourself is not about being the best at something or putting on a performance for others but about finding a way to show who you are, and how you see the world, that can help you feel good about yourself. All week we have been sharing things that express our personalities and make us feel good. The week culminated in an Express Yourself Mufti day where children dressed to show their personality and hobbies. Sophie wore a shirt in beautiful fabric made for her when she used to live in Lilongwe in Malawi and Poppy chose to decorate her dungarees with sequins, buttons, paintbrushes and measuring tapes to communicate her passion for ar

The RSPB are calling for everyone to spend an hour this weekend logging the birds they can see in their gardens, from balconies or simply out of your window. By counting the birds in your patch, you’re helping to take a snapshot of how they are doing. And the more people that submit their results, the better picture the RSPB will have of how garden birds are faring across the UK. Click here for more details of how to join in.

Friday 15 January 2021 Strand Wins Street Tag Autumn Term The results are in – Strand Juniors are the winners! Huge congratulations to everyone who joined in with the Street Tag competition, pounded the pavements, used their power hour to maximise the points, but most importantly got out exercising. We have won some much needed funds for the Friends of Strand, as have our Infant colleagues who came in second. The leaderboard has now reset and the game is on again! We are currently in 3rd behind Strand Infants and Edison Primary so get out there and start tagging when you are taking your daily exercise. Current leaders in the Strand leaderboard are lferg, anamazon and euan – however you’ll have to make some serious distance to catch Mr Ingram… apparently cycling is the key.

Friday 8 January 2021 Thank You for Your Kindness Thank you to everyone who has taken a moment to call or email to show their support or thank staff for all their hard work, it is much appreciated. We recognise that remote learning is not the best way for children (or families!) to learn and are very appreciative of the support of our community as we move again to online schooling.

Friday 8 January 2021 BBC Give a Laptop Campaign With schools closed again, the BBC have organised a scheme for people to be able to donate any old laptops or devices that they are no longer using. The idea behind the scheme is that some of us may have received or purchased new laptops or devices over the Christmas period and now have an older device that we are no longer using lying around the home. The BBC is working with a series of charities to pair these devices up with children who are most in need. The donated device, which can include tablets, laptops or even mobile phones, will be wiped and shared with a child in need to support their online education during lockdown. If you or someone you know may be interested in participating in this scheme then more details can be found on the link here.

Friday 8 January 2021 Remarkable Remote Learning What a remarkable start you have all made to your remote learning! The teachers are amazed by your engagement and how quickly you have all adapted to the new way of working. As we are now clearly going to be learning remotely for the foreseeable future we will be working hard to refine our Remote Learning offer. We want to make sure that it delivers key learning, has plenty of elements of practice, gives feedback but, most of all, is workable for families who are juggling their own work commitments and may have children in different schools all making different demands. We will continue to listen to feedback and make changes when we find out ‘what works’ for Strand families. We have already made some adjustments to timings and are busy finding an efficient solution to the conundrum of writing on PDFs. This is a work in progress but I’m sure you will all agree that the staff have worked incredibly hard to put together such a cohesive and well planned curriculum that mi

Thursday 17 December 2020 And Finally... A huge thank you to the whole Strand community for your support and hard work in what has been the most challenging of years. As we move into the festive season please do remember to adhere to the guidelines, maintain social distancing and look after your loved ones by sticking to the face, space, hands mantra. In doing so we will continue to work together to keep our entire community safe and school open.

Thursday 17 December 2020 Strand Eco Committee Some of the Strand Eco Committee managed a virtual meeting with Miss Heale and Mrs Perkins last Friday for a catch up. Grace, Theo and Saira from Year 3 have now been voted onto the committee and we look forward to meeting with them in the New Year. It was agreed before we broke up last summer that the topics we would be tackling in school were waste, bio diversity and energy. We have allocated biodiversity to Years 3 and 4, waste to Year 5 and energy to Year 6. Please get your thinking caps on and come back with some interesting and feasible ideas/projects about how we can make a difference. It could be ways of recycling, reducing waste, saving energy or making the school environment a more healthy place to be. To start the ball rolling in the biodiversity category we have very kindly been given monies from the Parochial Charities which we will be spending on four new fruit trees in our front entrance area.

Thursday 17 December 2020 A Message From the Governing Body As 2020 draws to a close we wanted to the take this opportunity to tell you how proud we are of Strand on the Green Junior School. As a school, and as a community, you have pulled together as a team to overcome the many educational, health, social and technological challenges that you have faced this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. We know there have been some tough days for pupils, staff, parents and carers but you should look back on this year with a great sense of pride at what you have achieved and how you have thrived. The new logo couldn’t have come at a better time - Spirited, Scholarly and Supportive - it describes Strandites, and everything you all stand for, so perfectly!

Friday 11 December 2020 Remote Learning – Are you Ready? Please take a minute to read through this information. Equally, if you don’t have a device for your child to use tell us and we will be able to help – but we do need to know this information in advance.

Friday 13 November 2020 BLUE Friday Next Friday 20th November Next week is Anti-Bullying week. To show our support, we will be holding BLUE (Be Lovely and Understanding to Everyone) next Friday to show our support. This fits very well with being a Strand Upstander.

Friday 6 November 2020 Mr Eastmond Nominated for a Prestigious Ivor Award We heard this week that Mr Eastmond, who currently teaches djembe to Year 4 and leads on our brass project, has been nominated for an Ivor for a jazz composition. The Ivors are just about the biggest awards in the business, akin to the Oscars. If you were lucky enough to see our musicians play at the Festival Hall earlier this year, you will remember Sam conducting the massed brass band and leading the Street Band in a great rendition of Ain't Nobody. Sam is an inspiration to the children so we’re immensely proud and lucky that he’s one of our teachers!

Friday 16 October 2020 Remote Learning We have been working on our Remote Learning offer which your child would access if they have to self isolate, or if they are sent home following a confirmed case or school closure. We have based our offer on core principles and designed it so that there is continuity of learning and no one misses out on the planned curriculum. We will be using Google Classroom and printouts of key resources to deliver this offer, hence all our efforts to ensure every child is able to use the platform and to identify families who may need support with technology. Thirty new Chromebooks arrived last week so these are ready to loan if needed. Attached to this newsletter are two key documents telling you when and how to access Remote Learning and an example timetable. We have created a Remote Learning section on the website where you will find lots more information, documentation and helpful 'How to' videos for Google Classroom.

Thursday 8 October 2020 Match Day Parking You may have seen some local press and social media coverage regarding Strand Schools providing match day parking for Brentford Community Stadium. EST (Event Support Team Ltd), the company at the helm, has a proven track record of working with sporting venues and local communities to provide and organise car parking for sporting events. The advantage of using our school site, along with the grounds of some of our neighbouring schools, is that all of our children stand to benefit from a much needed source of revenue which in these difficult times could prove invaluable. Similar arrangements operate successfully across the country, with Twickenham Rugby and Fulham FC being two local examples. However, we fully appreciate residents’ concerns regarding any possible disruption and, to that end, have been exploring the issues raised by the Strand-on-the-Green Association with EST. Whilst timely communications have regrettably been impeded by the pandemic, we will of course, keep you up

Friday 2 October 2020 Strand joins the mini London Marathon Sunday 4 October is the date of the Virgin Money London Marathon, which will be very different this year with 45,000 adults all over the world participating in the race virtually! Between Monday 28 September and Friday 9 October Strand Juniors will be participating in the ‘Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon’ in our PE lessons. We have decided to combine our athletic sessions with this event to see if every child can run 2.6 miles over the 2 weeks! The children have certainly embraced the challenge and have been demonstrating the Strand values. Special mentions go out to Sebastian in 3K who, incredibly, achieved and beat the 2.6 mile target in just one session! For Year 4 it was Nyah and Kaitlyn in 4B who impressed us with their consistent steady pace and commitment. Finally, well done to Jayden in 5H for his excellent attitude and Noah in 5RM, who showed fantastic courage!

Friday 11 September 2020 Welcome Back! What a joy it has been to have everyone back in school - we have so missed the sound of children playing happily, cheery good mornings, the bell ringing for the end of playtime and children excitedly sharing their learning. Thank you for bearing with us as we improved our drop off and pick up procedures - it was running like a well-oiled machine this morning. We hope to solve the issue of sibling pick-ups once Cygnet Club is up and running so watch this space.

Friday 10 July 2020 Updated Term Dates Every child will be back in school in September every day. Although Friday 4 September is an INSET day for the majority of staff we are using this opportunity to welcome our new Year 3. The rest of the school will return on Monday 7 September. Children moving from Kingfisher to Otter class, who are much more familiar with the set up will be joining us on the 7th September when transport resumes. The new term dates are on the website – it’s an unusual layout this year and our term dates are different to those published for the borough as we have adjusted the start and finish dates of the Autumn Term. Make sure you check them before you make plans.

Friday 3 July 2020 School Open in September You will have seen that yesterday the government made an announcement regarding schools in September. Again the guidance is weighty, a mere 45 pages this time! However, the headlines are clear: Every child will be back in school in September every day. Obviously there are a lot of logistical details to be resolved in order to make that happen but this period of wider opening has allowed us to trial systems and decide what works well and what doesn’t. In September, we will be operating a staggered start and staggered finish. We will write to you with more details of what your child’s day will look like once they are in school either before the end of term or during the holidays. We are all very excited about seeing everyone again and staff are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 7 September.
-
Friday 3 July 2020 Welcome Back! It has been fantastic to see so many children back in school this week. Just the sound of children playing has made everybody smile. They have been so eager to talk and tell us all about the fantastic home learning they have been doing whilst at home – they really are a credit to you all. We hope your child has enjoyed their time in school and are looking forward to the rest of the days they are due to spend with us before we break up on the 17th July.
